Outline of Research at the Start	本研究は、江戸時代初期にキリシタンがいかなる事情で潜伏し、信仰を維持したのか、解明することを目的としている。徳川幕府が1614年に禁教令を発令し、キリスト教宣教師を国外に追放して以来、日本では「殉教と潜伏の時代」に入ったとされ、幕末まで密かに信仰を子孫に伝えた潜伏キリシタン集団が、長崎周辺に数多く残ったことが知られている。しかし、彼らがなぜ「潜伏」という形態を彼らがとったかは不明のままである。本研究では、禁教令後潜伏にいたるまでの30年間に焦点をあて、宣教の実態を一次史料に基づき明らかにする。それにより「潜伏キリシタン」が成立する経緯を解明し、宗教が民衆社会に果たした役割を考察する。
