Outline of Research at the Start	近年、近世以来現在まで続く「西の湖（にしのこ）」畔の円山町（滋賀県近江八幡市）のヨシ（葭）問屋（西川嘉右衛門商店）に、膨大な史料群（「西川嘉右衛門家文書」）が残されていることが判明した。これを受け、研究代表者は、古文書整理をおこないながら研究活動を進めてきた。本研究でも、この西川家文書を中心としつつ、研究代表者がこれまでに所在を確認している西の湖周辺の諸家のヨシ関係史料を分析対象に加え、近世・近代におけるヨシ地の歴史的特質、およびヨシ流通の歴史的展開について明らかにする。
