Outline of Research at the Start

幕末の修好通商条約の原型となった日米修好通商条約は、「不平等条約」とレッテルを貼ったのでは、その本来の同時代的意義・性質を見失うと考えられる。しかし幕末維新期を通じて形成された修好通商条約「群」は、関税規定を中心に段階的に不平等性を強め、一方で、領事裁判権や最恵国待遇の規定が不平等とする認識が、日本国内の制度や価値観の変遷とともに生じ、条約運用過程の中で強められていったものと想定される。本研究はこうした見通しを念頭に、幕末明治初期の修好通商条約群の交渉過程、及びそれをめぐる認識の形成と変遷の過程を、マルチアーカイヴァルな手法に基づき、実証的に再検討していく。
