Outline of Research at the Start

現代においてポピュリズムは「愚民」による体制攪乱運動とみなされることが多い。本研究はそうしたポピュリズム像の修正を目的に、アンテベラム期アメリカ合衆国において頻発した政治的騒擾を人民主権論に基づくポピュリズム運動とみなし、これに対峙した為政者側のポピュリズム対抗戦略を分析するものである。
本研究が焦点をあてるのは、反ポピュリズム勢力であるエリートが講じた「デモクラシーの「飼いならし」策」（運動の「非合法化」や人民の「愚民化」）である。これによってポピュリズムが「異端化」され、エリートの唱える統治の思想やシステムがアメリカ民主政において「正統」とみなされるにいたった過程を明らかにする。
