Outline of Research at the Start

本研究は、欧米の諸国家が備軍の形成と徴兵制・民兵制の確立を急いだ初期近代（近世）において宗教的な理由（聖書の命じる非暴力の立場）で兵役を拒否した再洗礼派（とくにメノナイトとアーミッシュ）の非暴力主義の内実を明らかにするものである。彼らはどのようにして兵役を免除されたのか。免除金を支払ったのか、熟練を必要とする生産労働が評価されたのか、本研究ではスイス、ドイツ、フランス、アメリカ各地の文書館や教会に残された一次資料を掘り起こし、彼らの非暴力主義の理想と現実を見極めることにある。
