Outline of Research at the Start	本研究課題の実施計画は、概して３段階に分けられる。第１段階では、19世紀初頭の「人種」をめぐる言説の構築過程を考察し、ベンジャミン・ランディの思想と活動について分析する。第２段階では、アメリカ植民協会（ACS）の創設とそれに対するランディおよび白人と黒人アボリショニスト双方の反応を考察する。第３段階では、人種偏見の強いアメリカ社会からの黒人の隔離と自立を望んでいたランディが、なぜACSの活動と距離を置いたのか、加えて、テキサスの独立と西部領土の膨張などについてランディはどのように評価していたのかを分析する。最終的には、当時のアボリショニズムの史的意義と限界を論じる著作を執筆する予定である。
