Outline of Research at the Start

沖縄本島の西方に所在する久米島の沖には、長大な砂州が広がる。本研究の対象となるElizabeth and Henry号は、1849年にこの砂州に座礁した。救助の様子は琉球王国、イギリス海軍、座礁船の船長らが記録している。申請者は現地踏査により本船の遺物を確認し、おおまかな座礁地点を把握した。
本研究は、文献史学的手法によって「船の一生というマクロな動態」を捉えつつ、考古学的手法によって遺跡における「座礁の痕跡というミクロな現象」を分析し、座礁を含む本船の一生とそれを取り巻く歴史的背景を把握する。これら分析を通じて、近世末の「西洋列強の東アジア進出」と終始説明されてきた実像の一端を明らかにする。
