土壌は実生活の中で広く存在する物体であり、犯罪捜査において土壌が人や物と事件現場を結ぶ証拠物となることがある。その際、求められるニーズは「この土壌はどこから来た土壌なのか？」という単純でありながら困難な課題である。
本研究では、証拠物として得られる、量が限られた土壌について、従来からの手法である地質学的分析に加え、土壌中有機物（主として腐植に由来すると考えられる）の熱分解GC-MS分析および土壌中植物DNAの次世代DNAシーケンサを用いたメタゲノム解析を実施することにより、その土壌がもつ属性（地質学的特徴、土地利用、植生を判明させ、ひいては土壌の採取地を推定することをめざす研究である。
