Outline of Research at the Start	本研究は、明治から昭和戦前期にかけての日本の監獄制度が何によってどのように決定づけられたのかを、隣接する諸領域の研究成果や新たな史料の分析を踏まえて提示しようと試みるものである。具体的には、監督官庁・被収容者（囚情）・予算・議会・社会や政治の状況といった諸要素を踏まえて、従来の法制史学で論じられてきた「近代日本の監獄」像を再構成する。このことによって、監獄制度史研究の実証性・説得性、さらには対話可能性を高めるとともに、将来的に他の各学問領域との共同研究を可能とする土壌を形成したい。
