Outline of Research at the Start	本研究課題の対象となるヒュームとルソーについては、両者のスミスへの影響という観点から研究がおこなわれてきたが、それらはいずれもスミスとの関連で別個におこなわれてきた。これらはスミス研究として有益だが、ヒュームとルソーに焦点を絞った研究は残念ながら不十分である。これには、両者が直接に出会ったときにはともに主要な著作の出版を終えていたという理由がある。そのため、初期の著作について両者のあいだに強い影響関係があったと主張することは難しいが、両者に対する同時代人の評価を盛り込むことで、18世紀後半の知的・文化的なコンテクストの中に両者の思想を位置づけることは思想史研究として可能であり、また有効である。
