Outline of Research at the Start	大正初期から昭和初期に東北地方は凶作に見舞われ、農民の生産活動や生活に甚大な影響を及ぼした。東北地方の凶作の歴史は本来そうした短期的事件で語られるべきではなく、近世の天明期以降、20年～30年の周期で襲来した中長期の悲劇の歴史でもあった。しかし、このことは同時に近世の東北農民が20年～30年の周期でそのダメージから回復を繰り返してきたことをも示している。本研究は20世紀初頭の東北農民の経験、すなわち凶作とそのダメージ、そしてそこからの回復のプロセスと彼らの生活水準の変動を、乳児死亡という人口指標と近代東北日本に残された信頼できる凶作史料から、忠実に復元することを主な目的としている。
