Outline of Research at the Start	人間の尊厳と近代社会の構造的関連性に関する従来の主要な社会学理論は、西欧の特殊な歴史的経験にもとづいており、それがアメリカや東アジアなどの非西欧社会をどの程度適切に説明できるかは未解明である。そこで本研究では、人間の尊厳という理念が社会に定着する過程の差異やそうした差異が生じるメカニズムを解明するために、アメリカ、ドイツ、日本における暴力規制の制度（刑罰、武器の規制、警察の整備など）と人間の尊厳などの価値理念の関連性を比較歴史社会学的に分析し、より高度な一般性をもった方法論と社会理論を構築することを目的とする。
