アーヴィング・ゴフマンの社会理論と、ハロルド・ガーフィンケルのエスノメソドロジー、及びハーヴェイ・サックスが創始した会話分析は、相互行為秩序の記述・分析を主題にすえた理論・方法という共通点をもちつつ、知的交流を通して重要な立場上の差異を形成していったが、その差異がいかなる理論的・方法的意義をもつのかについてはいまだにその全体像が明らかにされていない。本研究は、ゴフマンやガーフィンケル、サックスらの未公刊資料が収蔵されているアーカイブスの調査を通して両者の知的交流や相互評価、それぞれの理論構築の道筋を明らかにすることで両理論を統合的に理解する枠組である「状況の社会学」を構築する。
