本研究は、在日米軍基地が所在する首都圏の地域社会をフィールドとして、特にその「文化」の側面における変容過程と現状を、<グローバリゼーション>の視点から把握し、新たな解釈と理解を提示する。
米軍基地の存在によって、その周辺地域では、正負の両側面を有した複雑な「国際化」が進行してきた。本研究は、これまで主に「政治」的な問題と見做されてきた米軍基地が所在する地域社会の過程と状況を、<グローバリゼーション>として捉え、特に「文化」の側面に着目して考察する。また、沖縄に比してその存在が見過ごされてきた、首都圏郊外に所在する（所在した）米軍基地に焦点を当て、地域社会との関係の複雑な諸相を明らかにする。
