教育実践において、それぞれに異なる生活履歴、学習特性、学習要求をもつ子どもたちは、教科内容・教材との相互作用を通じてどのような発言、思考、表現を行っているのか。教師は、教育実践において生じる子どもの事実（発言、思考、表現など）にいかに応答し、自らの教材観と子ども理解を新たにし、深めているのか。
本研究では、子どもが教室での学習を通じて、教科内容に関することばの「意味」をどのように獲得し、発達させていくのかという観点から、教科書などの教材が想定している学習内容と水準、思考の流れの妥当性を検証し、教育課程の改善に資する基礎的な知見を提示しようとするものである。
