Outline of Research at the Start	本研究では，大量絶滅直後の三畳紀初期に現れて以降急速に多様化し，白亜紀末にほぼ完全に姿を消した「海生爬虫類」に注目する．海生爬虫類化石に付随する微小な生物組織片や母岩の含有物質に着目し，これを消化管残存物の候補として食性の解明を試みる．特に，大型の生物組織の外部形態だけでなく，過去に見逃されてきた微小生物片の微細構造および化学的性質を調べ，生物片から餌生物を特定する．この解析により，食性の直接証拠である消化管内容物に関する情報が飛躍的に向上し，魚竜型類の爆発的放散やウミガメ類以外の選択的絶滅をもたらした直接要因を，食性の観点から明らかにすることを目指す．
