Outline of Research at the Start	動物の体内の器官にはチューブがきまった巻き方向にループしているものがある。たとえば哺乳類の大腸のループは腹側からみれば大きな時計回りである。このループ形成の機構を<チューブの軸まわりのねじれ>が<チューブの大規模なループ形成>と対応しているというアイディアに基づいて、数理モデル（vertex dynamics）を使って調べる。腸管ループの研究は、動物体内の非対称な形態という学術的興味だけでなく、社会への波及効果、とくに医学において重要な課題である。若年層や老年層でよく見られる腸管ループの異常、例えば頻繁におこる腸捻転症と総称される腸閉塞の大部分は捻れが原因とされている。
