Outline of Research at the Start

水面に棲む表泳性生物を「ニューストン」と称する。代表種として、刺胞動物門のヒドロ虫類に属するカツオノエボシ、カツオノカンムリおよびギンカクラゲがいる。これら3種は現在、汎世界的に同一種とされているが、それを評価することは困難であった。
本課題では、日本全国に散発的に漂着するニューストン性ヒドロ虫類を徹底的に収集・飼育・標本化し、マイクロCT技術を利用した全く新しい形態形質の評価、ゲノムワイドな解析によるニューストン初の集団遺伝学的解析を行う。
そして、得られた3種の形態・分子的データから、ニューストン性ヒドロ虫の進化の主要な要因を議論する。
