Outline of Research at the Start	鯨偶蹄目である鯨類の「複胃（胃が複数の部屋に分かれる）」を主軸として、同じく複胃を持つ偶蹄類の「反芻類（ウシやヤギ）」と鯨類と最も近縁種である「カバ」の３者を用いて、３者の胃を1.形態学的（肉眼・組織）に観察・記録し、2.分子生物学的に胃内細菌叢のプロファイルを解析し、１と２の結果を３者で比較・検討することで、まずは、鯨類複胃の消化システム及びその機能の解明を目指し、さらに鯨偶蹄目内で「複胃」という特徴は、分類形質になりうるのか？系統を反映しているのか？収斂なのか？などの解釈に繋げる。
