Outline of Research at the Start	熱帯から亜寒帯にかけての多様な環境に生息するベンガルヤマネコPrionailurus bengalensis の採餌生態と頭骨・体骨形態を個体群（亜種）間で比較することにより、イリオモテヤマネコP. b. iriomotensisが小島嶼という餌資源が乏しく食肉目が生息するには難しい環境に適応してきた謎を解き明かす。イリオモテヤマネコは他個体群と比べ、齧歯類を低頻度で、大型爬虫類を高頻度で捕食していることがわかっている。本研究では、頭骨や四肢の形態は動物を捕殺し咀嚼する採餌生態と密接な関係があることに注目し、本種が爬虫類など多様な餌動物を利用することにより形態変化が生じたという仮説を検証する。
