Outline of Research at the Start

雌の多回交尾は雄原因による繁殖失敗に対する保険である。
集団中に「ハズレ雄」が20％いて雌がそれを識別できない場合、1回交尾だと20％の確率で繁殖失敗が起こるが、3雄と交尾していれば「すべてハズレ」の確率は0.8％に低下する。雄が繁殖失敗をもたらす要因には一時的なもの（偶発的な交尾失敗、精子の一時的枯渇など）と恒久的なもの（有害突然変異、雌の遺伝子との不和合など）があり一時的要因に対しては同じ雄と繰り返し交尾すれば回避できる（毎回失敗しないから）が、恒久的要因に対しては相手を代えなければ対処できない。すなわち1雄と長期的関係を築いて「貞節」を尽くすのと、複数の雄と「浮気」するのとどちらが有効か。
