KeywordsSleepiness / Claustrum / Slow wave activity / Sik3 protein kinase
Outline of Research at the Start

A neural process that regulates sleepiness in mammals remains elusive. The claustrum, a subcortical nucleus that receives inputs from sleep-wake-related areas is a candidate neural site to investigate the neuronal substrate for sleepiness. I will determine whether the alternation in claustrum neuronal activity is a trait mark of sleepiness in Sleepy mice by monitoring and optogenetically controlling their activities and input connections.
