Outline of Research at the Start	敗血症患者の多くは四肢筋力の低下を特徴とする筋萎縮を発症し、ICU-AWと呼ばれている。ICU-AWは、ICU生存退室後の長期予後や生命の質に強く関連するため治療法や予防法の確立が望まれているが、早期リハビリを除き未だ積極的な予防法は知られておらず、その病態も解明されていない。そこで我々は敗血症では過剰なβアドレナリン受容体刺激が不都合な全身性の応答を惹起させ、様々な臓器障害を招き予後を悪化させることに着目し、『過剰なβアドレナリン受容体刺激によって筋肉も障害され、その表現型がICU-AWである』という仮説を立て、敗血症時のβ遮断薬の筋委縮抑制効果について検証する。
