Daft Rの「4．精巧化段階」にあると推定する全国規模の難病患者会５つを選定し、①組織構造、②リーダーシップの様式、③管理システム、④活性化へのイノベーション、の4点から分析する。5つの患者会の選定基準は、日本難病情報センターHPの患者会情報の疾病別全国組織34のうち、2023年6月時点で「全国組織設立から20年以上経過している会であること」「都道府県支部を10以上有すること」「活動目的に「社会的運動」を含んでいること」から、全国筋無力症友の会、全国膠原病友の会、全国パーキンソン病友の会、日本ALS協会、ベーチェット病友の会を候補としており対象を最終決定の上、分析の焦点を定めて研究を行う。
