Outline of Research at the Start	人間活動によって陸上で廃棄されるプラスチックはやがて一部が海洋ゴミとなり、長期間に渡って海面を漂い、風波や紫外線による物理的・化学的劣化によって破砕され微細化する。このうち5mm以下の大きさになった断片がマイクロプラスチックであり、世界中の海域へ拡散している。本研究ではサンゴ礁海水に含まれるマイクロプラスチックの大きさ、数、組成、潮位や季節によるこれらの変動性を調べることによりサンゴ礁におけるマイクロプラスチックの動態を明らかにし、インド-太平洋のサンゴ礁海域に広く分布するミドリイシ科の造礁サンゴにどのような生理的影響を及ぼすことになるのかを評価する。
