Outline of Research at the Start

本研究の目的は、西洋の活版印刷術黎明期における活字鋳造技術とその発展を明らかにすることである。15世紀半ばのグーテンベルクによる活版印刷術の発明は、印刷革命と呼ばれるほど大きな社会的影響をもたらしたが、未解明の部分も多い。なかでも基盤技術である活字鋳造に関しては、繰り返し使える一つの母型から多数の同一の活字が鋳造されたという定説に対し、最初期には一度しか使えない多数の母型が使われた可能性が議論されており、検証が必要である。本研究では、統計的分析やコンピュータを活用した複数の手法を用いて最初期の印刷物を分析し、活字鋳造技術の詳細と発展の様相の解明に取り組む。
