本研究は、古代ギリシア哲学者、プラトンの思想における「欲望」の意義の解明を目指す。彼の魂論・心理学は、様々な用語と文脈を駆使しつつ欲望の働きを叙述しており、その徹底的で幅広い分析が人間心理についての彼の思索を複雑かつ豊かなものとしている。この研究によって、プラトンテキストを精緻に読解すると同時に、社会集団における欲望の暴走や、個人における依存症といった現代の喫緊の問題に対する有益な知見の獲得が目指される。
