Outline of Research at the Start	修養とは、主体的に人格や精神面の向上を目指す志向として、明治以降に日本社会に普及した概念である。修養には、模範とされる人物が掲げられ、その人物の人格や振る舞いをモデルに自助努力する、という大きな特徴がある。そこで本研究では、人格形成と人物表象との新たな視座により、近代日本における「女性の修養」の実態を実証的に解明することを目指す。方法としては、明治から昭和戦前期までを対象とし、模範的とされた人物の目録化およびその表象の機能の分析・記述を行う。教育者や著述家らによる女性の修養論で展開された模範的人物像と男性の修養との比較を行うことで、近代日本の精神文化史の総体的な解明を目指す。
