Outline of Research at the Start

This project will analyze the complex presence of Utopianism in the literature of the early Showa period (1925-1945), focusing on three different sets of texts: 1) Works by authors involved in Taisho-era Aestheticist Utopianism; 2) Works by former proletarian authors that wrote in or about the colonial development efforts in Manchukuo (1932-1945); 3) Works by authors in speculative fiction set in Central Asia.
