Outline of Research at the Start

西洋文学の歴史において、古代ギリシア・ローマ文化はしばしば作家たちの想像力を刺激してきた。19-20世紀転換期の英米文学において、とりわけヘンリー・ジェイムズやイーディス・ウォートンのような知的な環境に浴した作家にとって、そのような古典古代の文物は大きな意味を持った。その影響はギリシア文学、すなわち悲劇に代表される戯曲のみにとどまらず、哲学や芸術によるものなど、広範に渡った。本研究は、総体としてのギリシア・ローマ文化が、作品にどのように受容されているのか、そして作家の解釈によってどのように変容しているのか、その様相を示すことを目的とする。
