| Outline of Research at the Start |
This study aims to (1) elicit learners’ strategy selections using an online survey adapted from the MALQ’s statements, (2) examine the strategy combinations they use in their computerized listening notes, (3) and understand learners’ reasons for their selections using oral listening journals. In addition to developing a novel digitalised approach to utilize listening journals in second language learning, this study will examine individual learners’ resource selections, strategy use, and experience of real-time extensive listening practices.

| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I have now obtained ethics approval and I have planned the project. This has involved obtaining permission from the Media Library to use their space for the data collection period. I have also purchased ipads and created both paper and visual (video) guides to help students follow the notetaking and voice memo process. I successfully completed my data collection between October 2024 and February 2025 and am not preparing the data for analysis.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I have completed the data collection period and am now preparing the data. I should have the survey data prepared for analysis by fall semester and the qualitative data prepared and ready for analysis by next Spring.
I now have to develop the qualitative analysis scheme and also train both research assistants and raters in using the system.
I hope to have the results ready for conferences by AY2026.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I will now proceed with analysing the survey data first before processing and analysing the qualitative data.
For the survey data, I will tidy and clean the pre-survey and post-survey data before I analyse the qualitative comments from the survey using thematic analysis. I will then be able to use these results to understand trends and patterns in the participants' listening and also understand their reasons by checking their justifications.
In Fall AY2025, I plan to transcribe the voice memos collected for the five listening journals from each participant. I will also use content analysis for the iPad written journal notes to understand which practices were used. As there are five journals from 56 participants (i.e., 280 journals) I plan to use one semester to analyse this data; although I can also analyse this data in AY2026 if needed.
