Outline of Research at the Start

明治維新後、近代化を始動した日本社会が小学校教育制度を導入し、短い期間に普及させていったことは、比較史的にも注目される。しかし、制度の導入によって必要となる膨大な財源を調達し、小学校の設置・維持を進めた地方自治体と地方の豪農・商人・資産家の役割については、十分に共有されていない。本研究は、彼らの選択や行動が小学校教育の普及にどのような影響を与えたのか、なぜ彼らは過重な経済的負担を受け入れて小学校の設置・維持を推進したのか、について考察していく。
