Outline of Research at the Start

The goal of this research is to enhance the resilience of earthen structures against erosion due to heavy rainfall and tsunami. The present research develops finite element methods and microscopic flow visualization techniques to enlighten the pore-scale phenomena. A variational multiscale homogenization method will be developed to connect the multiscales while simulating the erosion of soils due to water. Also, the research will reveal variation of soil and fluid properties near the interface and connect the theories of fluid mechanics and soil mechanics to predict soil erosion due to water.
