Outline of Research at the Start

This research explores the possibilities of craft for the revitalization of rural areas through their engagement with global flows. Departing from case studies from Japan, we employ a comparative perspective with other initiatives in Portugal and Brazil that are making use of Japanese craft technologies. We ask: How do rural residents negotiate the meanings of place and instrumentalize craft resources to attract visitors to their communities? And can such initiatives foster cultural diversity, leading to the creation of cosmopolitan communities in rural areas that add to their revitalization?
