| Outline of Research at the Start |
This interdisciplinary study aims to promote science-based solutions for environmentally sustainable craft ceramics by delivering the first Best Available Technology report of small pottery studios, informed by international case studies and Life Cycle Analysis.
|
| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The first year of study has produced the consolidation of previous research, the publication of studies in related topics (i.e. sustainability of craft ceramics), academic presentations, further review of literature, material experimentation in the ceramic lab at university and initial contacts with potential collaborating academics. The chapter "A Systematic Critical Review of Sustainability in Handmade Ceramics" published in February 2025 discusses gaps and biases in the current discourse on sustainable technologies for craft ceramic production. The paper presented at the Making Future conference in the UK in the autumn of 2024 offered a framework that avoids blaming individual pottery manufacturer and looks instead at wider practices around the production and use of handmade ceramics. Material experimentation with waste and circular economy networks continues in the laboratory at university, while ongoing conversations are securing opportunities for fieldwork and collaboration on LCA studies with academics.

Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The opportunity to conduct ethnographic research on sites in Japan and abroad is still being discussed with relevant potters, who often have busy schedules that may not align with my own availability to conduct the research. Similarly, the study relies on collaborations with LCA experts and these are still being discussed due to difficulties in continuing to liaise with my current academic collaborator at the University of Exeter in the UK.
|
| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The current academic year has started by working on extending the current network of collaborators using both direct contacts with academic at Science Tokyo and their own contacts, as well as seeking collaborators abroad through the Somat consortium (which includes 5 universities from Europe and Asia). Multiple collaborators can offer a speedy and effective approach. In addition, the project will continue to map circular resources for ceramic production in the Tokyo area and conduct material experimentation to test physical properties and craft qualities of both raw materials and fired ceramics. In particular, the summer of 2025 will focus on fieldwork in Japan and the LCA study of the university ceramic studio, to provide a baseline analysis for other cases.
