Outline of Research at the Start	後漢から魏晋南北朝期の中国における「左右」観の変化を明らかにする。世界的には右優位が一般的だが、中国では3世紀頃に左優位が定着したとされるものの、その理由や経緯は不明である。本研究は、左優位の観念が民間においていつどのように伝播したかを跡づけるために、中国各地での現地調査によって、この時期に盛行した左右一対の動物像（墓前の有翼石獣像および仏像の台座の獅子像）の雌雄表現の地域差を把握する。東アジアの農耕文化圏内部における地域文化の対立・融合の過程の一端を示すとともに、基層文化を特定の民族と直結させず歴史的文脈の中で理解する学際的研究の方法を切り拓くことが本研究の狙いである。
