Outline of Research at the Start

感染細胞内でウイルスタンパク質が機能する際に、機能欠損した「できそこないタンパク質」が混ざり込むことで正常なタンパク質まで機能しなくなる場合があり、「できそこないタンパク質」が一定量を超えるとウイルスの感染性が著しく低下する場合があることが、これまでの植物ウイルスを使った研究で明らかになった。これは我々人間が行う「多数決」が攪乱された状態に類似する。そこでウイルス配列由来のペプチド（＝できそこないタンパク質断片）を利用してウイルスの多数決を攪乱することで、植物ウイルスを予防したり、ウイルスに感染してしまった植物を治療したりすることを普遍的な技術として確立するための研究を行う。
