Outline of Research at the Start	角膜上皮は重層扁平上皮であり角膜上皮は2週間ごとに更新される。この幹細胞についての理解は進んでいるが細胞の脱落についての時空間情報とメカニズムはほとんど理解されていない。我々は細胞のviabilityに着目した解析から、角膜上皮が通常の光照射により角膜の最頂部ではない部分で障害されることを見出した。また、これが角膜上皮の落に関連しているという知見を得ている。このことは角膜上皮が独自の細胞脱落、死のコントロール機能を有している可能性を示唆している。この知見に立脚した角膜恒常性の検討は創性が高いのと同時に臨床医学にも重要な知見をもたらすことから挑戦的研究としてのその詳細を検討していく。
