本研究構想は、一見関連のないように思われる“がんの共食い”と腫瘍免疫制御というユニークな観点から研究を進めることで、がんの新たな腫瘍免疫逃避機構の提唱につながるオリジナリティに富んだ内容である。さらに、本機構は共食いという新たな「食べる」同種細胞間コミュニケーションの提唱につながり、 がんのみならず感染症や炎症性疾患の新たな病因論などを含めた学術に変革をもたらす大きなポテンシャルを有した挑戦的な研究課題である。
