本研究では、現代英語における法助動詞oughtおよびmustの歴史的発達を明らかにすることを目的とする。法助動詞oughtについては、その歴史的発達を中英語期に観察された非人称用法の観点から明らかにする。mustについては、非人称のoughtの出現と消失の動機付けに関する仮説がmustの非人称用法についてもあてはまるかを（史的電子コーパスを用いて）検証することにより、その歴史的発達の全体像を明らかにする。
