Outline of Research at the Start

This research aims to produce a study of the representation of Italy in Japanese visual culture over the last two decades. The theoretical reflection will engage with the concept of place as articulated by the Japanese thinker Kitaro Nishida, as well as with the broader relationship between thought and spatiality within the Kyoto School. The field research will utilize these theoretical insights as an instrumental framework for situating and investigating two case studies: the history of Italia Mura in Nagoya, and an overview of the use of Italian locations in manga and anime.
