Outline of Research at the Start |
Astrocytes have many roles from providing structural and metabolic support to neurons to shaping synaptic connectivity and function with behavioral outcomes. However, characterization of astrocyte diversity and the underlying mechanisms of its generation has not been explored. Here we focus on hippocampus where astrocytes in different CA1 layers show distinct ability to modulate neuronal activity, to study the cell intrinsic and external basis for astrocyte diversity in CA1. We will identify the key regulators and reveal how astrocytic layers in CA1 are organized.
