動物の小腸には、腸管免疫臓器であるパイエル板が存在している。本研究は、パイエル板内の常在性微生物の存在という点に着目し、パイエル板の「機能成熟」と「形態形成」という、異なる2つの視点から、幼若期のパイエル板の発達プロセスを複合的に解明する。
これまで、腸管免疫機構の発達に関わる微生物解析は数多く行われてきたが、 微生物がパイエル板に取り込まれた後、それらの生死がどうなっているのかなど、真相は未解明なままであった。形態学的かつ機能学的な解析を実施することにより、幼若期パイエル板の機能・形態成長を促す、パイエル板内微生物種の特定と、それらが引き起こすパイエル板成長のメカニズムの解明を可能にする。
