恐竜から鳥類への進化の過程では、翼が獲得されたことによって歩行から飛行へと移動様式が大きく変化した。翼の獲得には、発生フレームシフトによる第1指の保持と、前翼膜の獲得という、他の四肢動物には見られない特殊な形態進化が含まれる。しかし、これまでの研究では、なぜ恐竜－鳥類系統でこのような特殊な形態進化が生じたのかについて、理解が全く進んでいない。 本研究では、鳥類の翼における軟組織の発生に着目し、進化的に新しく生じた胚環境の特殊性と化石記録に見られる形態進化を照らし合わせることで、恐竜－鳥類系統における前肢形態の進化機序を解き明かす。
