本研究では、両大戦期のドイツ語圏のオペラを、文化や社会に越境的に存在する「道化」を軸として探求する。道化は、矛盾した概念の境界を自由自在に行き来し、社会を鋭く諷刺するという独自の役割を担ってきた。特に本研究の対象作品では、道化は狂言回しや社会への批判者という役割を与えられている。その台本と音楽を分析することで、両大戦に伴う「人間精神の危機」と、ジャンル自体の転換に伴う「オペラの危機」の中で、オペラと社会が道化を媒介として如何に作用し合っていたのかを明らかにする。併せて演出を分析することで、道化が如何に解釈・視覚化されたのか、その視覚化と上演時の社会情勢との相互作用を明らかにする。
