本研究では、宮古語諸方言の共通祖語である「宮古祖語」の再建を行い、各方言に至る通時的な音変化とその年代を求める。
これまでの琉球諸語の比較言語学的研究では、琉球語派内部での古い借用の可能性は殆ど考慮されていない。しかし、宮古語には南琉球祖語からの継承語としては説明が難しい特殊な音韻対応を示す語が多数存在する。本研究では、これらの語が15世紀の沖縄語首里方言（本研究では「沖縄古語」と呼ぶ）からの古い借用であるという仮説をもとに、首里方言をはじめとした沖縄語の諸方言や、沖縄古語の文献資料を参考にしながら、宮古祖語を再建し、『雍正旧記』の綾語に残る宮古古典語や、現代宮古語諸方言に至る音韻史を復元する。
