混合原子価でかつ異常高原子価である遷移金属イオンを含んだ新奇酸化物の合成を行い、観測された電荷転移に伴う相転移現象と現れる物性変化（結晶構造、磁性、熱特性、電気特性）を考察することで、不安定な電子状態をもつ遷移金属イオンにおけるスピン、軌道、格子の自由度の相関関係を明らかにしていく。さらに、転移温度や物性変化の定量性から新規機能性材料の開拓も行う。
