本研究は、近世後期、特に蘭学が盛んであった時期（18世紀後半から19世紀）に作成された「腺」「膵」のような漢字一字の訳語に着目して、翻訳語の作成方法の選択が、蘭学者の間でどのように推移したかを明らかにするものである。そのために、翻訳語が記される医書のうち、これまでに研究の俎上に上がっていないものについての基礎的研究を行い、翻訳語とオランダ語原語との対応関係を明確にする。その上で翻訳方法の分類を行い、語構成や造字法の観点から考察を行うことで、漢字一字の訳語を翻訳語史の中に位置づける。
