本研究は、動脈石灰化を引き起こすことを見出した新規モデル動物を用いて、その病態生理を解明することにより、最終的には石灰化を抑制しうる栄養学的研究基盤の確立を目的とする。研究は主に、大動脈石灰化の進展機序の解明と、栄養学的な介入の影響評価で構成され、現在までの解析で新規知見をいくつか得ている。この研究を遂行することにより、石灰化機構の解明、石灰化に対する栄養学的研究基盤の確立、食生活と石灰化の関係解明に関する知見が得られると期待される。
