本研究はアストロサイト細胞膜電位変化の分子機構解明及び、脳情報処理への寄与を紐解くことを目的とする。
従来、細胞膜の電位変化が重要とされていた神経細胞と大きく異なり、アストロサイト細胞では膜電位の変化はないものとされてきた。しかし、近年では実験技術の向上により神経細胞同様に膜電位変化をすることが見られた。この現象は既知のアストロサイト細胞の機能を逸脱し、脳の情報処理に今まで予想されていなかった手段で影響すると期待されている。
よって本研究は、アストロサイト細胞膜電位変化による情報処理への影響を解明することで、今後てんかんなどの神経細胞だけでは説明仕切れなかった脳の慢性疾患への理解に迫る。
